Col. Robert Kirkpatrick Gaston and Leticia Southerd

Col. Robert Kirkpatrick GASTON, son of Hugh GASTON and Mary KIRKPATRICK, was born 23 July 1812 in Tennessee. He was married to Letitia (Lettie) SUDDATH/ SOUTHERD who was born 20 August 1819 in South Carolina.

Col Gaston moved to Anderson Co, Texas, in 1849, and to Mt. Sylvan, Smith County, in 1860. He served several terms in the Legislature from Anderson County before the war, and later several terms from Smith County.

They were the parents of these children:

  1. George, born 1838, AL; died in Civil War
  2. William, born 1840, Wilcox Co, AL; married Jane FURLOW, 18 March 1868, Anderson Co, Texas
    1. Edwin
    2. William H.
    3. Robert K
    4. Laura, married Hon. E. P. FINLEY
    5. Annie Ione
  3. Robert H, born 1843, MS; Killed in the Battle Antietam, Civil War
  4. Mary Priscilla, born 13 January 1847, MS; died 1 Jan 1915, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas; buried Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas; married 13 February 1867, Dr. William Jefferies GOODMAN
  5. John H., born 1848, MS; married Bettie MILLER, daughter of John A. MILLER & Laura AYRES
  6. James M, born 1853, Texas; married Ola T. ALLEN, 17 Dec 1879, Smith Co, Texas
  7. Henrietta, born 1856, Texas; married John T. READ, 20 October 1880, Smith Co, Texas

Col. Gaston died 6 April 1881 in Smith Co, Texas. Lettie died 5 February 1883. Both are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith Co, Texas.
