THE THOMAS FLEWELLEN FAMILY

Thomas Flewellen was born 29 Mar 1799 in Warren Co, Ga.. He was married to Frances Maria Drake, born 29 Oct 1803. They settled in Upson Co., Ga. He held several elective offices in Upson Co., Ga. including State Senator in 1851 and 1852. In 1854 they moved to Camden, Ark., for a few months, then moved to Smith Co, Texas, in 1855. Thomas died 13 Nov 1889 and Frances died 21 Oct 1861. They both are buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery in Smith Co, Texas.

Children of Thomas and Frances Maria Drake:

  1. Frances Carolina Flewellen was born 29 Sep 1824. She grew up in Upson Co., Ga. and married a lawyer, John J. Cary, on 3 Sep 1840 in Upson Co. When her parents moved to Texas, she remained in Georgia, but later Frances and John Cary moved to Henderson in Rusk Co, Texas. After the death of her husband in 1873, Frances moved to Smith Co. and lived with her father. Later she moved to Mineola and lived there with the family of her daughter, Sarah Cary Shelton. Frances Flewellen Cary died 14 May 1906 and is buried in the City Cemetery in Mineola, Wood Co., Tx. John and Frances had five children,

    3. Ada, (1852-1919), married Norman C. OGILVIE (1836-1906)
    4. Mary Eugenia.,(1854-1903), married John M. HICKEY (1847-1903)
    5. Georgia, (1858-1861)
  2. Elizabeth Virginia Flewellen was born 26 Dec 1826. She married James Thweatt* on 12 Dec 1849 in Upson Co., Ga. They followed her father to Smith Co, Texas and settled northwest of Lindale. Elizabeth Virginia Thweatt died 20 Dec 1888 and her husband died 13 May 1892. Both are buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery. They had 5 children, but the 2 died in infancy.

  3. Thomas Archelaus Flewellen was born 27 Feb 1829 in Upson Co., Ga. He married Victoria Monroe Thweatt* on 17 Oct 1852 in Upson Co., Ga. In 1854 he moved with his father to Camden, Ark., for a few months, then moved to Smith Co, Texas, in 1855 with his father and other family members. They settled northwest of Lindale. Thomas A. Flewellen was in Co. D, 13th Tx Vol. Cavalry during the Civil War. Victoria Flewellen died 5 Jun 1868 and is buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery. Thomas A. Flewellen and Victoria Thweatt Flewellen had 3 children,
    1. Junius Jefferson, (1855-1934), married Philada Virgina Johnson (1856-1941)
    2. Eliza Harris, (1853-1937), married Albert Alonzo Womack (1844-1910)
    3. Mariah Antoinette, (1857-1878), married Robert Garland Brown (1851-1917)
    Thomas A. Flewellen married a second time to Henrietta Marshall and they had one child.
    1. Mary Martha (Mattie), (1871-1953), married Ezra Nathaniel Hill
    Thomas A. Flewellen moved to Longview about 1872 and was mayor of that town in 1878-79. He died 17 Jun 1893 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Longview. His widow, Henrietta Flewellen, died in 1916.
  4. Eugenia Louisiana Flewellen was born 15 Mar 1832 in Upson Co., Ga. She married Kinchen P. Thweatt* on 27 Apr 1852 in Upson Co. Eugenia and Kinchen Thweatt moved to Camden, Ark., in 1854 with her father and then to Smith Co, Texas. in 1855 with the Flewellens. They settled northwest of Lindale. They had no surviving children, but did have one child who died as a baby. Eugenia died 12 Oct 1863 and Kinchen died 4 Dec 1876. Both are buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery.
  5. Mary Martha (Mollie) Flewellen was born 14 Jun 1834 in Upson Co., Ga. She moved with her father to Camden, Ark., where she met Ezra Nathaniel Hill and married him about 1854. From letters and census records, it appears that Mollie spent part of her time in Camden, Ark. and part at her father's in Smith Co, Texas. It is unclear what happened to Nat Hill, but Mollie ended up living at her father's house in Smith Co, Texas. Mollie died 7 Aug 1919 and is buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery. They had 2 children, but only one survived.,
    1. Minnie E., (1855-1934), married Columbus L. Copeland (1850-1934)
  6. Sarah Cebelle (Belle) Flewellen was born 24 Nov 1836 in Upson Co., Ga. She moved with her father to Camden, Ark., in 1854, then to Smith Co, Texas. the next year. She married Dr. John C. Fowler on 14 Oct 1858 in Smith Co. Belle died in Oct 1864 and is buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery. Her tombstone shows she died in 1863, but family letters show otherwise and the marker was not erected until after 1919. After her death, her husband took the 2 children and moved to Panola Co., Miss. They had 2 children,
    1. John Coleman, (1859-1922), married Sarah Osie Bell
    2. Wilbur F., (1862-1901)
  7. Enos Russell Flewellen was born 26 Sep 1840 in Upson Co., Ga. In 1855 the family moved to Smith Co, Texas, and settled northwest of Lindale. Enos Russell Flewellen was named for an uncle in Barbour Co., Ala. When the Civil War began, Russell was in school in Alabama and staying with the family of this uncle. He joined Co. F., 12th Ala. Inf. along with his cousin. After the war, he returned to Smith Co., but in 1866 he left and went to Washington Co, Texas, where he had Flewellen cousins. There he met Mattie Drake Weems, a widow, and married her on 1 May 1867. They had 13 children, several of whom died in infancy. Russell later moved to Rains Co, Texas and died there on 6 Nov 1900. His widow died 27 Jan 1913. Both are buried in the Prospect Cemetery in Rains Co, Texas. The surviving children were:

    2. Minnie Belle, (1876-1958), married Presley R. Montgomery (1872-1958)
    3. Maud, (1878-1958), married Earnest Prince
    4. Walter Dewitt, (1881-1952), married Frances

    6. Edna Pearl, (1890-1980), married Charley Parker McWatters (1877-1959
    7. Johnnie, (1883-1976), married George Myers
    8. Eugene Russell, (1871-1888)
    9. Alice, (1874- ), married J. Frank Nunnelee
  8. Wilbur Fisk Flewellen was born 1 Feb 1843 in Upson Co., Ga. He moved to Smith Co, Texas in 1855 with the rest of the Flewellen family. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in Co., K, 3rd Tx Cavalry and was wounded in the leg during the war. After the war, he entered medical school in New Orleans and became a doctor. He married Ophelia Graham on 13 Jul 1870 in Rusk Co, Texas and they had twin daughters,
    1. Emma, died 3 Oct 1871 and is buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery.
    2. Elizabeth Ophelia, (1873- ), married Robert Roscoe Haley (1781- )
    Wilbur Flewellen left Smith Co. and moved to Fayette Co, Texas where he married Mary Elizabeth Hill on 11 Apr 1875. He moved to Bell Co, Texas. in 1889. Wilbur Flewellen died in Bell Co. on 8 Apr 1925 and his wife died 18 Apr 1935. Both are buried in the North Belton Cemetery. They had 8 children.

  9. Joseph John Calvin Drake Flewellen was born 12 Feb 1846 in Upson Co., Ga. He was named for an uncle who was a doctor in Thomaston, Ga. Joe Flewellen moved to Smith Co, Texas in 1855 with the Flewellen family. During the Civil War he joined Co. H, 35th Tx Cavalry. After the war, he returned home to Smith Co. and settled on the Flewellen farm. He married Emma C. Richardson on 15 Feb 1870 in Smith Co. and Joe Flewellen died 8 Jun 1917 and his wife died 14 May 1930. Both are buried in the Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery. They had 8 children,

    2. Thomas Junius, (1876-1959), married 1. Mary Adelle Beaarden (1877-1936), 2. Ernestine Glasscock (1909-1982)

    5. Helen May (Nell), (1884-1973), married 1. Francis T. Allen, 2. John King
    6. Alice Emier, (1881-1888)
    7. Edward Porter (1887-1934), married Beulah May Davis (1894-1940)
    8. Mary Jo (Josie), (1890-1976)

    *Note: The parentage of the James, Kinchen and Victoria Monroe Thweatt - the parents were Kinchen Peterson Thweatt (1789-1849) and his 2nd wife, Eliza R. Harris (1802-1848). They are buried in Thomaston, Ga.
