The Nichols Family

Like most families in Georgia, the Nichols family had a difficult life following the Civil War. Probably encouraged by relatives to seek a better life in Texas, a group of families from Crawford Co., GA, including the Bundrick, Webb, Stembridge and Chapman families left Knoxville, GA by train in December 1872. They traveled by rail to the Gulf where they boarded a steamship traveling to New Orleans, then up the Sabine River to Shreveport. By way of Longview, they temporarily settled in Wood Co, Texas before moving into other counties.

Benjamin and Mary McCook Nichols (and several of his children and grandchildren) traveled to Texas with his nephew Daniel Benjamin Nichols, son of his brother Vincent who remained in Georgia, joining two of his sisters already in Texas: Nancy Ann Nichols who married Abner Stripling and moved to Nacogdoches Co. in 1859 and Hannah Nichols who came to Texas with her second husband John Barnett Dickson to Smith Co, Texas in 1858.

John is buried in Starrville Cemetery, Hannah's grave is probably in the family cemetery marked only by a natural stone. Nancy is buried in Nacogdoches Co., Abner in Angelina.

After losing some children "to fever" part of Benjamin's family returned to Georgia and finally settled in Florida. Most of Benjamin's descedants moved to Sabine County.

Daniel Benjamin Nichols and his wife Mary Louisa Gregory settled in Smith Co. The farm descended through their son Charley Alexander Nichols. His granddaughter still owns the farm. Daniel Benjamin NICHOLS served with the C.S.A, Co. F, 54 Regt. Georgia Infantry - FAMILY PICTURES - Deed
